What to Expect from a Bowen Session

How many Bowen sessions will I need?

There is no one answer to this, as every body is different and everybody reacts differently to Bowen.

It is likely that you will experience some positive responses after your first session. A short course of treatment can be enough to make a real change, although clients often choose to have a regular session, a bit like an MOT, to keep on top of any niggles and changes.

How long is a session?

Your first session will be about an hour, maybe a little longer, and will start with a chat about your health and what has bought you to Bowen. This will be followed by your initial Bowen treatment to balance the body.

Subsequent Bowen sessions will usually be between 30-60 minutes depending on which procedures are used. Sessions are tailored to bring maximum benefit to the client.

What is a Bowen Session like?

A Bowen session will start with a chat with your practitioner to find out your symptoms and how you are feeling that day.

The treatment will usually begin lying on a couch. Ideally, moves are done straight onto the skin or through light, loose clothing.

If lying on a couch is problematic, clients can remain seated or find a position most comfortable for them. The comfort of the client is paramount so please discuss with your practitioner if you have any special requirements.

Your practitioner will perform specific moves on the body, followed by short breaks in which they will leave the room. These breaks are what make a Bowen treatment unique, and although they can seem odd at first, the client will soon adjust to and accept this routine, and enjoy the breaks. This is where the magic happens!

How will I feel afterwards?

Everyone feels different during and following a treatment.

During the treatment, you may feel any number of different sensations including warmth, cold, tingling, lightness or heaviness. You may not feel any of these. Or you may go to sleep. All of these are perfectly natural responses.

Following the treatment, you may feel quite tired. It  is advisable to drink plenty of water and walk around at regular intervals for the rest of the day, but do not do anything that requires too much physical exertion or puts stress on the body like vey hot or cold conditions.

It is possible that symptoms may feel more intense for a day or two following an initial treatment. For example, a back ache may feel worse temporarily before the benefits begin to increase. This is a normal part of the healing process and should not last for a prolonged period.

Always follow your practitioner’s advice for after care.
